This May Le Petit Ballon is focusing on organic wines and Jean-Michel Deluc has picked two spectacular examples to suggest for IGT readers.

La Tour Boisée Une Histoire de Famille 2015

Fruity, Crisp, Complex

Jean-Michel says:

I’ve known the Poudou family for a very long time and I’ve been a fan of their wines since I first began my career as a sommelier. The incredible charm of this estate is that they somehow manage to bottle their family story, the landscape of the Minervois and their ultimate respect for nature, being amongst the first organic producers in the region. The wine-making is equally ambitious, trying to retain as much of the fruit as possible whilst showcasing all this beautiful terroir and the result is frank, charming and full of character. Their family history lives in every bottle; I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

The estate:

La Tour Boisée is a family estate, built in 1826 and carefully maintained by its successive generations, who are as attached to the stunning terroir as its founders. For several years now, Marie-Laude and Jean-Louis have been developing their wines with the ambitious aims of being both locally important and also open to the world!

Food and wine pairing:

  • Roast duck, barbecued red and white meats, rack of roast lamb with roast potatoes
  • Salers, Saint-Nectaire, Reblochon, Pélardon
  • Vegetable casseroles

Tasting notes:

  • Eye: The wine has a soft ruby colour with the brilliant violet inflections of youth and an inviting sheen
  • Nose: The nose is complex, with aromas of ripe fruits, spices, smoke, tobacco, chocolate and peony. Wonderfully refined!
  • Mouth: Supple and juicy on the palate, this is full of dark, ripe fruit, liquorice and wonderfully crunchy tannins. Delicious and moreish, finishing delicately.

Tour des Gendres Cuvée des Conti 2015

Fruity, Floral, Honeyed

Jean-Michel says:

The deserved star of the Bergerac appellation, a poorly-known region often overlooked by amateurs and professionals alike, yet there is wonderful wine here! Forget the complexity and tradition of Bordeaux for a moment and indulge in delicious, thirst-quenching simplicity, ideal with appetizers and aperitifs. The body and sweetness of Semillon is blended perfectly with the freshness and verve of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle to produce this lovely wine. Luc de Conti’s motto is “closer to the soil and to nature”: the living proof of which is currently in my glass!

The estate:

The story of this family estate began in the 1920s, when the Conti family embarked on an adventure, leaving Italy to find a better life in France. They then settled in the Périgord to cultivate land and since then, successive generations have outdone one other to improve the quality of their wines. The entire estate has been certified as organic since 2005, the yields are limited to produce only the best grapes and each plot of land is vinified separately to reveal the unique expression of the land. Bravo!

Food and wine pairing:

  • Blanquette of veal, Paupiette with mushrooms
  • Seafood, turbot cooked with butter, fish tartare
  • Goat cheese, Cabécou, crottins, fromages frais aux herbes (Boursin)
  • Green bean salad, braised endives.
  • Sole meunière

Tasting notes:

  • Eye: The wine has a bright golden colour, with youthful hints of brilliant green.
  • Nose: On the nose, the wine is fruity and floral combining notes of acacia, citrus fruits, mango, pineapple, pear and peach.
  • Mouth: The palate reflects the nose, with the same balance of fruit and florality, with honeyed note and a soft note of mint on the finish.
