Truffles and Wine with Le Petit Ballon

Sod’s law. This autumn is proving to be the truffliest truffle season London has ever seen. Restaurants and bars all over the country are snorting up as many of these most magic of mushrooms as possible to quench the demand of the ever-increasing number of discerning gourmands sprouting up across the nation.

So, what’s the spore of contention? Well, Mother Nature’s sense of humour in this case. Truffles can be fussy little buggers when they’re still in abundance, constantly playing hide and seek. However, to exacerbate matters further, climatic conditions for the very best of the winter varieties in northern Italy and south-eastern France have been far from ideal for them to bloom in great numbers. It’s not all doom and gloom though; many establishments are offering great deals and experiences centred around these most precious of subterranean orbs. Make sure to get your fungus fix before the best – and limited produce of the season has expired.

Of course, these buried nuggets of black and white gold require careful consideration and matching with wines to fully appreciate their intense flavour, and not butting in on the main event. Le Petit Ballon’s selection for November manages to do just that.

A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan in the form of the Bringairet cuvee from La Grande Massif, clinging onto the Mediterranean coast in the Languedoc, provides the perfect conditions for wintery truffle dishes.

Personally, I’d choose this curious white wine blend incarnation to enjoy with a heavily-truffled bowl of pasta. A blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier brings together the best of Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Rhone creates a symphony of mineral-rich, spicy and rich wine that ticks all the boxes for pairing with truffles or cheese. Which, let’s face it, now it’s almost Christmas, you’ll be eating a hell of a lot more of that too.

The discount code for our readers is INGOODTASTE-LPB and offers a 30% discount off the first month subscription. The Grape Expectation box, which is £29.89 a month including delivery, will contain the wines above for the month of November. Check it out at Le Petit Ballon.
